Grounded: How To Defeat The Broodmother (2024)

The Broodmother is the very first boss fight to arrive in Grounded. She's by far the hardest creature to defeat in the garden, requiring a lot of set-up and preparation before you head to her lair.

Before starting with the guide, it should be mentioned that the Broodmother is presently the very endgame of Grounded's content in its current Doom and Shroom version. You'll need to have completed pretty much everything else in the game to have the gear required to beat her. This guide covers the items you should prepare with, as well as which items and armor are best for the fight.

Where To Find The Broodmother's Lair

Grounded: How To Defeat The Broodmother (1)

The Broodmother's lair is hidden deep inside the Hedge, although it's not a spot unfamiliar to long-time Grounded players. It's where the original boss fight for the Broodmother was located, just next to the frisbee stuck in the hedge. You need to work your way across the various twigs, branches, and ziplines that connect the inside of the hedge.

You'll start to notice more spiderwebs and baby spiders when you reach the frisbee. That's when you know you're close. Look for the giant, webby opening...that's the Broodmother's lair.

What You Need To Bring To The Broodmother Boss Fight

Grounded: How To Defeat The Broodmother (2)

As previously mentioned, the Broodmother is something you want to tackle once you've beaten everything else in Grounded. She's definitely one of the more scary enemies in the game. Here are the key items and gear you need for the fight.

What Weapons Are Best For The Broodmother Fight?

There are a few options for weapons to take into the fight, but it largely depends on whether you're trying to defeat her solo or whether you're playing with a friend.

The Mint Mace has proven to be the most powerful weapon in terms of pure damage, especially if you equip the Barbarian mutation that improves your damage. The Mint Mace is crafted with:

  • Five Mint Chunks
  • Nine Silk Rope
  • Eight Flower Petals

You can solo the Broodmother with the Mint Mace, but in an ideal world, you'll play this boss battle with at least one other player, who should be using ranged weapons to chip away at the spider.

Both Bratburst and Splatburst grenades are also recommended for this fight. The Broodmother spawns lots of smaller spiders at least three times during the fight. You need to kill them quickly otherwise you'll get overwhelmed by the third wave. Grenades work perfectly for this.

  • Bratburst Grenades are crafted with two Fungal Growth, an Ant Egg, and four Dry Grass Chunks.
  • Splatburst is the sticky version of the Bratburst, crafted with a Bratburst, five Web Fiber, and five Sap.

Be careful when you use the Splatburst. Accidentally stick one of the smaller spiders charging at you and you're in for a bad time. Those grenades do a lot of damage to the player.

Items To Bring To The Broodmother Fight

There are a few key items you need for the Broodmother fight. Here's everything you should bring with you.

  • Healing Items – Any kind of healing item will do, but if you want to be really ready you should prepare some smoothies. Boost Juice works wonders for health, hunger, and stamina, especially because the heavy attacks of the Mint Mace drain you quickly. You can check out our full list of Smoothie recipes here.
  • The Broodmother BLT – This is the boss spawning item. You'll need to craft it beforehand. The crafting recipe is found at the Field Station inside the hedge, and it's crafted with two Ladybug Parts, two Bombardier Parts, and one Thistle Needle, using the Oven.
  • Liquid Rage is another great Smoothie to take with you as it just boosts your overall damage. It's crafted with Grub Goop, Ant Mandibles, Larva Spike and Spider Fang.

Get The Mithridatism Mutation

The simplest way to make the Broodmother fight much easier, either for a solo player or in a team, is to get the Mithridatism mutation. This was added in the Doom and Shroom update.

All you need to do is defeat five Wolf Spiders. Compared to the Broodmother this is pretty straightforward.

The Mithridatism mutation blocks a huge amount of the Broodmother's poison damage, which means those hits that take a quarter of your health will now just give you a little scratch. Very important for this fight.

Boss Fight Strategy

Grounded: How To Defeat The Broodmother (3)

The Broodmother boss fight takes place inside the spider's lair, a tight, enclosed area that you can't leave once the fight starts. Like all the best bosses, the Broodmother has various attack types.

  • Watch out for the rapid attack. The Broodmother will try to bite you three times in a row. Block these with your shield or mace and then attack when the attacks end.
  • The Lunge attack does big damage but can be dodged. Watch out for when the boss sticks her abdomen up in the air.
  • The Broodmother's shockwave attack stuns you in place for a moment. This is probably the scariest attack, especially if it aligns with the various smaller spiderlings she spawns.

Your best bet is to be patient with the attacks. Wait until the spider lunges forward to move in with the Mint Mace and get a few hits in. With Liquid Rage and Barbarian in play, each hit should take a bar or so away.

Whenever the spiders spawn beneath the Broodmother, take a few steps back and cover the ground with grenades. This should kill them all quite easily.
