What is Medical Taping?

Medical Taping is a form of taping, in which kinesio tape is used, to remedy or prevent physical discomfort. Among other things, the elastic tape supports the muscular system, body’s own healing processes and influences the neurological and circulatory systems without restricting movement. The idea behind this is that muscles not only affect the body’s movements, but also, for example, the circulatory system, the lymphatic system. When muscles do not work properly, it can result in a variety of complaints and symptoms. However, when dysfunctional muscles are supported with this special elastic tape, the body’s self-healing ability will be stimulated.

How does it work?

When properly applying the tape, as far as possible, the muscles and joints are first stretched. After this, the kinesiology tape is applied. When the body part returns to its natural relaxed position, the tape lifts the skin slightly. In the place where the tape is applied you can see undulations forming, these are called convolutions. These convolutions create space between the epidermis and subcutis where all kinds of receptors of nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels are located. This promotes blood and lymph circulation. In addition, this lowers the pressure around this area. Kinesiology tape can be a solution to many physical problems as well as pain relief.

In fact, 85% of pain sensors are located in the upper layer of the skin (the superfascial fascia). The kinesiology tape activates the pain-relieving system. Any pain a client experiences is relieved by the kinesiology tape and may even disappear. The result is immediate improvement in the client’s movement and original muscle function.

When can Medical Taping help?

Medical Taping is very broadly applicable to complaints located on the musculoskeletal system such as muscle tears and joints such as a sprained ankle or knee osteoarthritis. It is also successfully used to reduce edema and lung-related complaints such as hay fever and COPD.

Medical Taping is used in post-treatment of injuries, reducing inflammation or fluid accumulation, postural corrections and in the treatment of complaints due to overuse.

What does a treatment look like?

Medical Taping is part of physical therapy or exercise therapy. If it turns out during the examination and treatment process that Medical Taping can be a good addition, then it will be added within the treatment.

Allergy to band-aids

Should you be unable to tolerate normal plasters on the skin, chances are that medical taping can. This is because the adhesive is made hypoallergenic. It then sometimes still happens that people have an allergic reaction to it. This begins with itching under the tape and soon disappears when the tape is removed.

Fees and charges

Medical Taping, as mentioned, is part of physical therapy or exercise therapy and is also reimbursed in the same way. If your insurance does not cover physical therapy or exercise therapy, there is also no additional cost for using the tape beyond the regular treatment fees.
